We’re huge fans of Brooklyn based artist David Jon Kassan and his beautiful oil portraits of normal everyday people from his environment.  His works are often a combination of figurative studies composed over “abstract tromp l’oeil texture studies”.

In this wonderful, short lesson from Kassan he shows us how to draw and eye, without really “drawing” and eye.  This is most definitely a great lesson from the portrait painting master.

Kassan received his B.F.A. in 1999 from the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY – and continues to share his information and techniques in a series of DVDs that are indispensable to any student artist.

Below you will find the video lesson, as well as examples of Kassan’s work.
