Artists HOW & NOSM recently paid visit to Los Angeles for their show “ACHTUNG!” at Known Gallery in Los Angeles. Known for their stunning murals, this talented pair left quite an impression on Los Angeles with the addition of their 106ft x 60ft mural, wall provided by the LA Freewalls Project. With bold imagery and vibrant colors; this vivid mural is meant to be a bold statement on the current moratorium of street art within the Los Angeles area.
Drawing attenton to their cause, ”ACHTUNG!” was packed with MSNBC have listing the pairs’ mural as one of the “Top 10 Murals in the Country”. HOW and NOSM left an indelible mark on the city of Angels, reminding us that beautiful art is the most powerful statement of all.
Warholian’s own Birdman had a chance to hang out with the duo for a couple days, capturing rare candid shots of the artists at work. In his own words “Watching the German twins How & Nosm paint is like watching an octopus spray paint with its arms flying around in organized chaos…”
More ABOUT HOW & NOSM:
The twin brothers HOW and NOSM are graffiti artists and professional muralists residing in New York. Born in the Basque country of San Sebastian, Spain, the Perre brothers grew up in Duesseldorf, Germany practicing the Bronx born art form of graffiti .Their late teenage years were spent spray painting the world, visiting many of the more than 60 countries in which they both left their remarkable artwork on any kind of surface including subway trains. During a visit to New York in ’97 HOW and NOSM were asked to become members of the legendary TATS CRU, and permanently relocated to New York shortly thereafter in ’99 – a move that marked their transition from painting on trains, and even the Berlin Wall – to creating elaborate murals and fine art.
The Perre twins have lectured at universities including M.I.T. and their work has appeared in numerous films, music videos and documentaries.
HOW and NOSM have been featured within the pages of numerous publications, including the New York Times and the New Yorker, and even stirred the likes of the Rev. Al Sharpton with the controversial undertones of subjects manifested within their art. As adept with a spray can as only few artists could ever hope to be with a brush, and best known for their medium, Perre’s body of work includes everything from canvas, skateboards and collectable toys to large scale multimedia sculpture – and for that matter, anything they can get their hands on.
In an age where lavish color and effects often compensate for style, the Perre Twins aka How and Nosm have taken an opposite approach. In their newest works the brothers have restricted themselves to a sparse color pallet – red, black and white. The absence of color accentuates every line so that the outline jumps to the forefront. The drawings have the aesthetics of Jack’s, Queen’s and King’s pulled from a deck of playing cards. The meticulous lines and intricate patterns presented in such a minimalist fashion makes the brothers’ work instantly recognizable and unique.
