Sunday May 15, 2011 ushered in the 100th anniversary of San Francisco’s most infamous foot race Bay to Breakers. Beginning at the Embarcadero (Bay) and traversing Market Street, The Panhandle, through Golden Gate Park, and finally ending at Ocean Beach (Breakers), this seven mile event is known less as a race and more as a city wide spectacular.
Created as a way to boost city morale after the 1906 earthquake, Bay to Breakers still very much embodies the fun, exuberant free spirit that San Francisco is known for. This event boasts an average attendance of 75,000 people.
While noticeably more subdued than usual, in part to the “ban” on alcohol and the threat of rain, this years race still held enjoyment for thousands of attendees. Not using rain as an excuse, people turned out bedecked in costume with the intent to celebrate the beautiful San Francisco Sunday. Dancing and drinking their way en route, the crowd enjoyed the festivities as much as any other year, and help Bay to Breakers remain one best parties in San Francisco.
