Ahhhhh Wondercon, it’s been 30 years in the waiting for me. I love art, but comic books are what really turned me onto art in general. I guess in a way you could say comic books were my “gateway drug” to fine art.
It’s been many years since I have been an avid comic book reader, probably 10 or more. Sure I pick up a graphic novel from time to time, but honestly folks, I’m totally out of the loop. Wondercon (held annually in San Francisco, CA) has EVERYTHING that your deviant heart may desire. This year was the 25th anniversary of the event, and the fanboy and fangirls came out in droves. In fact, the Saturday event date completely sold out and I’m told that the convention floor was an utter madhouse.
The cosplay was in full swing, and wow do people put some time and effort into their amazing costumes. I consider them all artists in their own right.
Goth clothing? Check. Spiderman sipper cups? Check. Girls and Corpses Magazine? Check. Not to mention more comic books than most will ever see in a lifetime.
Overall, I had a blast taking photos in the last 2 hours of the event’s close on Sunday. There were still a good number of individuals dressed as their favorite characters, and everyone was in jubilent spirits.
The event was cathartic for me, inspirational I might even say. Maybe I’ve been taking life to seriously lately? Maybe it’s time to open those boxes of comics (of which I still own a couple thousand), sit back, and find my inner dork again.
